Scan-to-BIM of the Gran Canaria Stadium

3D Survey and BIM Modelling of the Stadium Complex

Description

Modelical was hired by L35 to develop a detailed as-built BIM model of the Gran Canaria Stadium complex as part of its rehabilitation project.

About the project

The Unión Deportiva de Gran Canaria Stadium is preparing for a comprehensive rehabilitation and expansion.

The design proposes a complete renovation and expansion of the Gran Canaria Stadium, increasing its capacity from 32,418 to 44,484 seats through a continuous grandstand that enhances natural light access and promotes passive ventilation. The project integrates sustainable systems, underscoring a strong environmental commitment.

The stadium is conceived as a multi-purpose complex, incorporating restaurants, conference halls, a UD Las Palmas museum, retail spaces, and a sports hub—ensuring continuous use and preventing prolonged periods of inactivity.

Modelical services

Using point cloud data and available CAD documentation, Modelical developed Revit BIM models of the stadium’s architecture, structure, and surrounding urban environment.

Despite the scale and complexity of the stadium, the full Scan-to-BIM project was completed within four weeks by a team of up to 12 professionals.

The modelling work also required:

  • Rationalization of structural axes and grandstand modelling aligned with those axes
  • Development of more than 30 custom railing families
  • Conversion of Rhino geometry into Revit elements (32,418 seats modelled)

Deliverables

The Scan-to-BIM project included the following deliverables:

  • BIM structure of the project comprising seven models: Architecture, Structure, Urban Development, Roof, Seating, Grandstand, and Reference Model (dwg and point cloud)
  • Issue management through the Autodesk Construction Cloud (ACC) platform

Benefits

Moving from fragmented 2D CAD documentation to as-built BIM models provided the client with accurate and detailed information about the existing stadium complex, supporting the design phase of the rehabilitation project.

BIM for Stadium Projects

Rehabilitation and expansion projects for large stadiums require a precise understanding of the existing facility and its surrounding infrastructure.

Stadium design must balance structural complexity, spectator safety, comfort, operational requirements, and the venue’s long-term economic viability. Accurate documentation of existing conditions is therefore essential before renovation or expansion begins.

BIM models developed from reality capture data provide precise geometric information during the design phase, improving coordination between architectural, structural, and engineering disciplines.

Modelical brings extensive experience in stadium projects.

We support designers and contractors by delivering accurate BIM models that enable efficient design coordination and construction planning.

For owners and operators, we develop BIM models enriched with structured data and digital twin solutions that streamline stadium asset management, accelerate future developments, and improve operational and business performance.
