EUBIM 2015

EUBIM

In this post I want to make an approach to the 2015 EUBIM congress (Encuentro de Usuarios BIM) that occurs every year in Valencia. This meeting is the spanish reference in BIM terms and we were very pleased to be there watching all of our colleagues updates. This meeting is also an opportunity for getting an Autodesk Revit Professional Certificate by a test, and three of us, two on Architecture (Jose Angel Salanova, myself) and one on MEP (Pablo Villagrasa), decided to accept the challenge with success.

The test was sooooo easy, so if you know Revit UI my recomendation is the following: do it! you will pass it without trouble because It’s like a tutorial. The only thing you have to be careful is with roundings and punctuation.

We attended to a lot of presentations but, we can say that the congress was divided in three main themes:

1. BIM in University
2. Design and construction with BIM
3. Real experiences with BIM

Regarding the first point we could start with a little comment about the lecture by Joaquin Diaz Pascual called “BIM in Germany. Current status and implementation experience in building technical careers in Giessen THM”.

Diaz

He drew my attention because is always a pleasure to discover an exotic and deeply academic vision of the methodology. The lecture was very enlightening and full of content. I was very surprised about the implementation level that Germany has, but not in a good way, because of my conception of Germany as the engineering lighthouse of Europe, after attend Diaz lecture we can say that germans are facing problems with standarization like countries which are in an early BIM implementation stage. This 2012 paper from the “14th International Conference on Computing in Civil and Building Engineering” follows Diaz’s speech guidelines.

As far as design and construction with BIM regards and in real experiences with BIM too, Iria Carreira’s presentation was pretty cool.

Iria

She showed BIM’s state of the art in a country like United Kingdom which, as we know, is tackling, by government mandatory, a national level 2 BIM implementation in 2016. One of the most remarkable things is how she manages in different challenges in UK AECOM industry, for instance, before contract she gives a BIM maturity test to any possible stakeholder, and use it like a filter, cause in her company, on site they try to make regular Navisworks revisions with the contractor. She exposed that in Facility Management, her company made an investigation about all the parameter requirements that main FM software were requiring with the purpose of making an useful and interoperable model. She said also that companies in UK are far from a level 3 and an important amount of them barely are going to reach level 2 in 2016.

The last conference I want to remark and the one that actually shows a certain awakening by the national industry in BIM maturity terms by managing model information through smart workflows is Francisco Javier Revuelta Coruña’s: “Dynamo and management of views and sheets in Revit.” Although the conference wasn’t very descriptive, because there wasn’t any definition dissection sample, but explicit enough for those who have never been in touch with programming tools applied in BIM. For those who want to dive deeper on the subject you got some videos on similar definitions in Konrad Sobon’s youtube channel. Basically the point in this kind of exercises is that every single company has its own way for sheet classification, so after you have a clear spreadsheet with all the relationships between model views and organization requirements, it’s a managing lists problem.

The congress finished with the reading of the “BIM Academic Manifesto”. Basically this manifesto specifies some actions to reach long term objectives in spanish universities.

Manifesto

Finally, I think that such conferences would target mainly two profiles: those who want to begin to get BIM knowledge, and those who are interested in networking and meet the people that are making BIM possible. Regards and see you next year.
