Freeform Tile Vault Construction

Applying Computer Vision to Guastavino Vaulting

Modelical has partnered with Bóvedas Hispanas to develop an innovative workflow for freeform tile vault construction.

The system relies on computer vision techniques -through the use of OpenCV and Aruco open-source libraries- to detect a set of marker boards in an indoor known environment using in-expensive cameras and reconstructing their pose as guiding instrument in 3D.

This system has been tested in two free-form vaults experiences with considerable success and the results have been presented at the last edition of the Construction History Society of America Congress, held in November 2012 at MIT in Boston.
