Structures in Revit (IV)

Modelling Shafts

When it comes to open voids in elements, Revit offers several options: Shaft, By Face, Wall,… They work nice but not nice enough. I am going to present you another method, as easy as the others but with much more advantages. I’d say it’s a known method, perfectly documented in internet. I highly recommend you see this video:

It consists in create your own structural opening family. It’s a Generic Model based family with a void extrusion, a Detail Item family is nested to draw the symbolic lines. Among the advantages stand out:

  • You can take out openings from the analytical model easily.
  • You can scheduled them! If your family parameters are shared parameters (please), all data you want can be listed!
  • A few tips:

  • Use datums or other elements to locate shafts.
  • Create a new subcategory for symbolic lines, it would be easier to control its visibility.
  • Modify visibility settings in order to see structural opening family when you load it. (Pitifully visibility vanish when you do first cut. However, Modelical has an APP to reveal all void extrusions in a model!)
