Corner window modeling
Introduction
Currently, corner windows (not necessarily at 90º) are a frequent element in facade composition. Since Revit does not have a default way of creating them, therefore we must think of possible strategies to solve such a common occurrence.
Question:
How should I create a window family that can fit into two corner walls and that can be adapted to different angles? There are many downloadable window families at 90°, however not at different angles.
Answer:
First of all, with regard to the specific need, our recommendation is to use a curtain wall instead of walls and windows categories. This allows more flexibility during modeling since we have the freedom to decide what type of panel to use in each position of the curtain wall grid, such as glazed or solid among others.
However, if we assume that the window has to be modeled as such, we have no choice but to use a window family. Windows in Revit are commonly wall hosted, as it is in this case. We will need to create a family with a hosted pane and a floating pane, with an angle parameter that allows us to adapt its position to the second wall.
It should be noted that, in order to create the angle parameter, it has to be linked to a reference line. For the "floating" pane to be hosted on this line, the pane has to be created with a "Metric Generic Model face based" family. This nested family will be the same for the pane hosted on the wall.
Once the family is loaded up to the project, an opening in the wall (Architecture/Wall opening) should be made. Another alternative would be to create a void extrusion in the window family itself.
The final result will depend on the level of detail with which the window pane family and the window itself have been modelled.
