Sener and Modelical to Develop Digital Models of the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation Dams

The joint venture between Sener and Modelical has been awarded package 6 of the BIM Methodology Implementation contract issued by the Spanish State Secretary for the Environment (Secretaría de Estado de Medio Ambiente) to create BIM digital models for seventeen state-owned dams along the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation (Confederación Hidrográfica del Guadiana).

The consortium will apply terrestrial laser scanning and drone flights to capture point clouds and 360-degree images of the infrastructures and their auxiliary buildings.

The joint venture will deliver rich 3D models containing information to support dam management throughout the different phases of their lifecycle.

The joint venture, composed by the engineering and technology group Sener and the digital transformation consultancy Modelical, has been awarded Lot 6 of the BIM Methodology Implementation contract tendered by the Spanish State Secretary for the Environment to develop virtual models of the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation Dams.

The awarded works are part of the service contract for the development, coordination, implementation, and training on BIM methodology for state-owned dams, under the framework of the Recovery, Transformation, and Resilience Plan (PRTR).

This project will enable the creation of three-dimensional digital models of the infrastructures, containing information to support decision-making and facilitate their operation and maintenance.

Sener and Modelical will combine their expertise in infrastructure engineering and digital twin creation to develop the BIM models of the Guadiana dams.

In the initial phase, the consortium will undertake the digitization of the seventeen dams, their facilities, and auxiliary buildings, using terrestrial and aerial laser scanning technologies.

The use of drones and similar devices will enable the capture of point clouds and 360-degree images.

In the second phase, Sener and Modelical will model the infrastructures, coding each element to enable their integration with other systems. This way, the digital twins will be connected with systems such as geographic information systems (GIS) or computer-aided maintenance management systems (CMMS).

The classification and coding of the elements will facilitate the incorporation of associated documentation.  Additionally, three-dimensional environments will allow for virtual tours of the facilities.

In parallel, the joint venture will conduct several training sessions to ensure that the technical teams of the Guadiana Hydrographic Confederation can use the models for managing operations and maintenance.

These digitization and information aggregation works will change many aspects of dam management and will:

  • Allow working from virtual models that will serve as a single, reliable source of information for all stakeholders.
  • Ensure the traceability of information.
  • Improve coordination between disciplines in operations and maintenance.
  • Support decision-making.

The digitization of these infrastructures will bring benefits to the technical teams, the Spanish General Directorate for Water (Dirección General del Agua, DGA), and the population.
