BIM in construction for a City Light Rail Project

BIM Technical Office for the execution of various metro stations within an urban-scale light rail development.

In 2023, we were hired by the company in charge of the construction of a new driverless and fully electric light rail metro network to provide BIM Technical Office services for the execution of various metro stations, their outdoor area and landscaping.

The scope of our work included BIM tools implementation, Common Data Environment configuration, BIM guides, BIM Coordination, Quantity Take Off as well as Modelling services.

BIM modelling of the metro station outdoor area and landscaping for a proper integration in the urban context.

Modelical’s team coordinated the models in order to feed jobsite layout systems. Works included model coordination, upgrading and conversion into Civil3D. The content considered included metro station surrounding streets and sidewalks, pavement, street lighting, draining network and landscaping among other elements. To do so, Modelical engineers applied their jobsite experience in construction.

BIM tools implementation and Common Data Environment configuration

Modelical set up and implemented ACC as Common Data Environment to enable the management of the 3D models, documents and drawings among others and BIMCollab for issue tracking and management with construction disciplines.
Modelical’s team developed project specific BIM Guides to support proper and efficient workflows of the CDE tools.

BIM Technical Office and Quantity Takeoff (QTO)

During the construction of the metro stations, Modelical’s provided BIM technical office services including:

  • Surroundings topographical survey
  • Constructability review
  • BIM Coordination
  • Automations in Civil3D
  • Deliverable model in Revit and Civil3D and Quantity takeoff
  • XML Files for machinery guidance

Civil3D Models as sole source of truth

The Civil3D models developed according to the IFC (Issue For Construction) specifications were the sole source of information for all the disciplines involved in the project, including earthworks.
