BIM management office in the design phase of a 300,000+ sqm hospital project

Complete project coordination from the ACC Coordination Module.

In 2023, our client, an architecture studio specializing in designing and building healthcare spaces, was commissioned to design a hospital spanning over 300,000 m². The entire project was carried out using the BIM methodology, with all disciplines working collaboratively within the cloud-based common data environment, ACC.

Modelical was hired as the BIM management office for this project. Our services ranged from quality audits of the models and geometric coordination of the various disciplines to generating clash matrices directly in the ACC Model Coordination module.

Quality Audits for Hospital Project Models in ACC for Construction Cost Estimation

In the initial phase, the Modelical team defined all the auditing tools, workflows, and processes necessary to ensure that the project met the requirements outlined in the BEP.
In the following phase, the Modelical team conducted model audits at all key stages of the project. These audits included:

  • Reviewing the models of each discipline: structure, architecture, and MEP.
  • Verifying the coding of numerous model elements to ensure compliance with the final client’s standards and enabling accurate construction cost estimation.

In addition to these comprehensive audits, the Modelical team maintained weekly follow-ups with all stakeholders involved.

Project Coordination from the ACC Module and Development of an Ad-Hoc Clash Matrix Procedure

As established in the BEP, the coordination of the entire project had to be performed within the dedicated ACC module. To this end, the Modelical team developed a custom workflow in ACC. This procedure included:

  • Analyzing the clash matrix defined in the BEP.
  • Identifying the corresponding groups of clashes.
  • Setting up specific 3D publication views filtered by categories and/or elements to address the identified clash groups.
  • Creating a workspace within the ACC Model Coordination module for the project’s geometric coordination.
  • Configuring coordination views directly in the ACC Model Coordination module, organizing clash groups (publication views) by severity levels as defined in the matrix (Low, Medium, and/or High).
  • Implementing a naming convention standard that ensured:
    • Proper representation of the BEP clash matrix in ACC’s Model Coordination.
    • Organization of the different coordination views for clash detection, considering the severity of issues and clash groups.
    • Traceability and organization of issues detected during the coordination process.

 

 

 Key Outcomes and Achievements

  • Geometric coordination, or clash detection, was accessible in real time by all project stakeholders due to collaborative work directly in ACC.
  • The developed procedure is fully applicable to other project types (residential, hospitality, industrial) and represents a significant advancement in how the ACC coordination module is utilized.
